The first stage of a project to improve access to Port Fairy's Griffiths Island is scheduled to begin this month.

Moyne Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Meade said that the improvements will ensure a safe and accessible passage to the popular Griffiths Island Lighthouse.

“This project will not only improve safety and emergency vehicle access to the island but will also complement the natural attractions on the island and enhance visitors’ experience, encouraging an increase in tourism visitation and regional economic benefits.”

The $200,000 project includes the replacement of deteriorated infrastructure under the causeway and the construction of a new concrete path, and is jointly funded by the Council in conjunction with the Victorian Government.

“Council were successful in receiving $73,000 towards the project through the Victorian Government’s Coastal Public Access and Risk Grants program, with Council funding the balance required to complete the project,” said Cr Meade.

“As part of the project, Council will replace the culverts under the Griffiths Island Causeway and construct a new footpath to improve accessibility and longevity of the track.”

Council has advised the southern access to Griffiths Island will be temporarily closed during the period of construction.

“Works are scheduled to commence on Monday 19 April and are expected to be completed by the end of May, weather permitting,” Cr Meade said.

“Access to the island and the lighthouse will be via the northern causeway only whilst works are underway, to ensure the safety of visitors and construction workers.”
