Drivers On Mobile Phones Targeted

Warrnambool and district motorists are being warned of an increase in penalties for using a mobile phone while driving.

Road Safety Minister Jaala Pulford says the current penalty of 500 dollar fines and four demerit points will increase as authorities try to combat this year’s alarming road toll spike.

The admission comes as the government prepares to trial cameras that can detect mobile phone use.

The Minister says she thinks the entire Victorian community wants to see tougher penalties.

She says in addition to tougher penalties we need to see drivers being genuinely afraid of being caught.
