Prestigious Race A Winner

'Ablaze' trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace took out the 300 thousand dollar Haymes Paint 2019 Jericho Cup in Warrnambool yesterday.

Ablaze took the lead with 400 metres to go in the 4,600 metre race and powered home giving local and New Zealand connections the win.

Declan Maher says the horse is a revelation.

Owner Rod Lyons says “It’s as big a thrill as I’ve had in racing, to come to this race (and win).

“It means so much to our heritage. What these brave men and woman (during the World Wars) did for us. To be honest, I’m beyond words to have won the race.

“It brings a tear to your eye just thinking about it. It’s a pleasure and an honour to win it.”

Ablaze joined High Mode as the winners of the race struck to honour the race that took place in the Turkish desert more than 100 years ago when he proved too strong for his rivals in the 4600m contest.

Ablaze ($4) scored by three quarters of a length from local hope Golden Flag ($21) with Kiwi visitor Where Are You ($19) 10 lengths back third.
